Abstract

Schizophrenia is one of the most severe psychiatric disorders. It is a chronic mental disease that may include psychotic and cognitive symptoms as well as social withdrawal. The onset of this disorder often occurs in adolescents or young adults. Several theories intend to explain the origin of schizophrenia including alterations in central nervous system development due to stress or infectious agents, as well as genetic predisposition. Whatever the case, dysfunction of several neurotransmitter systems has been associated with this disease including dopamine, glutamate and nitric oxide. Studies about those topics may help to elucidate the pathophysiology of a disease that we know better and, maybe, understand worse.
