Citrulline in the central nervous system

Anteriormente se pensaba que la presencia de la citrulina en el sistema nervioso central (SNC) tenía un origen hepático exclusivamente; sin embargo, ahora se sabe que hay enzimas a nivel cerebral que la sintetizan. A pesar de que se desconozca el papel exacto de este aminoácido, su concentración en líquido cefalorraquídeo está asociada a enfermedades neurológicas y psiquiátricas, por lo que se sugiere que su presencia interviene en la fisiología y fisiopatología del SNC.
