The sign of Romberg is one of the classic signs and of great help in the neurological examination. It was described by the German Mortiz Heinrich Romberg in 1851, describing the loss of postural control experienced by patients with tabes dorsal after closing their eyes or in the dark.
Different descriptions of the Romberg sign are reported in the literature, and there is currently no consensus on the description of this sign. Romberg's sign was linked to damage to the proprioceptive pathway in its early descriptions, and is not only used in neurology, but also in other medical areas. Therefore, the sign of Romberg continues to be of great help in medical practice.
