Demand for care in a public psychiatric hospital in Mexico City in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: The SARS-COV-2 pandemic has increased the prevalence of mental disorders. Objective: To describe the demand for care for mental disorders in patients who received consultation during June to December 2021. Methods: Retrospective comparative study of the demand for care for mental disorders in a public psychiatric hospital during the second half of 2021 with that of 2019. Results. 5707 consultations were analysed, the reduction in demand was greater than 50% compared to 2019 (p=0.009), the demand for substance use disorders, depression and anxiety increased by 208%, 275% and 485% compared to 2019. Conclusions. The pandemic exacerbated the gap in the care gap for mental disorders, mobility restrictions and the closure of mental health units possibly affected access to mental health services.
