Abstract

Background: Single suture craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures. It may lead to structural and functional brain abnormalities. The prevalence of this condition has not been fully described in Mexico. Objective: To know the number of cases of the different types of single suture craniosynotosis at “La Raza” General Hospital through a 7 years period. Methods: Retrospective data from surgical craniosynostosis patients were consulted through the period of 2010-2016 from the Neurosurgery Department at “La Raza” General Hospital. Results: Craniosynostosis was most frequent in male infants (63%). Sagittal synostosis was the most frequent, followed by unicoronal synostosis, metopic synostosis and brachycephaly. Posterior plagiocephaly and multisutural craniosynostosis had the same number of cases and were the least common. Conclusion: These findings are similar to international reports in which sagittal is the most frequent synostosis. However, our findings are different from another Mexican report which mentioned plagiocephaly as the most common type of craniosynostosis.
